Families who lost everything they had in the tsunami disaster received sewing machines under relief services. Due to this, the city developed a variety of garments (shirts, trousers, etc.). As such, Hikkaduwa has become a must-visit destination for Hawaiian shirt lovers in Sri Lanka.
